OUR STORY

Behind the Scenes

The House of Gabriel Family Refuge provides practical and emotional support to men, women, and children as a family, through its diverse range of intervention and prevention social work services currently located in Henderson, West Auckland.

Established January 2021, The House of Gabriel family refuge works in accordance with its missionto: “break the cycle of family violence at the roots.” The House of Gabriel’s services is backed by a committed team of directors with lived and professional experience and includes family harm services, social advocacy, education, crisis intervention, safety planning and a 24/7 Helpline.

The House of Gabriel consist of three Directors:

April Blanchette - Registered Social Practice Manager

Raelene Tarau – Admin/ finance Manager

All directors have a true passion for the field all with lived and professional background of family violence. A basic saying guides the practice of the directors “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” We believe that everybody has the potential to change if they are given the right tools and support to make those changes.

We recognized the gaps having worked in another family violence organization that we felt the calling to fill. We saw that women would leave refuge because they wanted to be with their partner. For all the bad that the aggressor would do, the women did not want their kids to grow up without their dad. So, they would return to the partner. This is the reality for many women and their children.

Unfortunately, once they decide to go back to the partner, the service generally would be disengaged which meant that she was at higher risk of being murdered or seriously hurt. On average, it takes a women 7 attempts to leave a violent relationship. We believe that our Kaupapa provides a safety net by working with the family as a whole and addressing the real issue.

The House of Gabriel family refuge strives to create reciprocal relationships with all those who support our NGO, if you have any questions or would like to arrange to meet for us to Elaborate more regarding The House of Gabriel feel free to contact us.
